Do You Prefer “Fashion Victim” or “Ensembly Challenged”?

I’m not sure why I’ve never mentioned it before, but I’ve been in love with Ralph Lauren’s Rugby line ever since it’s inception in 2004. The opening in my home of Boston on Newbury Street drew me in immediately and I’ve been hooked ever since.

But let me start with with the biggest influence of fashion in my life, Clueless. When I go back and watch it now things kind of seem dated like baggy shorts and overalls. However, the things that have still stuck around in my wardrobe and find their way into my outfits are the essential academia pieces: pleats, plaids, berets, and knee highs. Which is why I immediately fell in love with Rugby. They’ve captured the university looks taking influences all the way back from the 19th century and gave it an edge for the twenty-somethings that want to draw away from their parents’ Polo wardrobe. I’ve always tried to do what Rugby also adds to their collection, which is insert some pieces of menswear with a feminine flair—such as ties, suspenders, and vests.

Similarly, Andre 3000 of Outkast came out with his own line of university-inspired apparel as well called Benjamin Bixby.

Pool-Shooting-Shimmy-Shyster

I need to give props to my favorite Spring Menswear collection of 2009, Junya Watanabe. It's the checks and the Panama hats that he dresses his traveling wayfarers in that I just can't get over.

XI

Eleven Magazine is a sharp, high-brow-but-relevant-to-generation-X take on fashion and culture for men from a group of (yes, you guessed it) eleven former and current school-mates of mine. Ever since I read Eric White's first draft I craved more and continuously bugged him about the first release. Well they seemed to have granted my wishes, because they now have a blog available.

The magazine itself is so promising when it has such dapper and dashing talents such as Ryan Haigh and Ross Thompson, all of whom I've shared the hallways with here at RIT. I may be a bit biased, knowing these fellows, but I truly admire their collective eyes for style.
